Training

Bottisham Swimming Club runs three squads: C, B and A.

The C Squad is a mixed ability group for those entering the swimming club.  Numbers in this squad are kept low to enable a good ratio of coaches/teachers to swimmers while the swimmers focus on nailing the techniques of all four strokes and the individual medley, together with their starts and turns.  Swimmers move up from this session when the coaches feel they are ready, on completion of a satisfactory 100m Individual Medley, and when space becomes available in the B Squad.  Age and gender are not considerations – it all depends on the individual swimmer’s ability and motivation.

The C Squad swims on Wednesday evenings at Bottisham Village College Pool between 6 and 7pm, and on Sunday evenings at Impington Village College Pool between 5pm and 6pm.

The B Squad is for swimmers who are working on strength, speed and stamina in their swimming and who are preparing to compete or competing regularly in Open and County Development galas.  Swimmers move into the B Squad and work their way up through the lanes as they get faster and stronger.  In all lanes at training sessions, the fastest swimmer will lead the lane; the coach will make adjustments between lanes as necessary to ensure an even distribution of swimmers and/or that swimmers are grouped with those at a similar level.  When swimmers have worked their way to the top lane and are consistently leading or close to leading the lane, with good technique and stamina across all strokes, commitment and a proven desire to compete, and if there is space, the Head Coach may move them to the A Squad on completion of a satisfactory 200m Individual Medley.  As before, age and gender are not considerations – it all depends on the individual swimmer’s ability and motivation.

The B Squad swims on Wednesday evenings at Bottisham Village College Pool between 7pm and 8pm, on Thursday evenings at Bottisham Village College Pool between 7pm and 8pm, and on Sunday evenings at Impington Village College Pool between 6pm and 7pm.

The A Squad is for our competitive and advanced swimmers, whose strokes are already at a high level, with good speed, strength and stamina.  Many of the swimmers in this session are at County level, and swimmers are expected to compete at Open galas, league meets and club competitions.  Sets are focussed to encourage hard work and consistent improvement.

The A Squad swims on Monday evenings at Impington Village College Pool between 8pm and 9pm, on Wednesday evenings at Bottisham Village College Pool between 8pm and 9pm, on Thursday evenings at Bottisham Village College Pool between 8pm and 9.30pm, and on Sunday evenings at Impington Village College Pool between 7pm and 8pm.

We have a personal trainer who takes B squad and A squad for land/dryside training the hour before they swim on a Thursday: B squad between 6 and 7pm, and A squad between 7 and 8pm.  This is to improve the swimmers’ strength and conditioning.
