Squad criteria

Bottisham Swimming Club operates 3 squads at present: A, B and C.

Membership of all squads, and movement between the squads, is dependent on a coaches’ assessment of swimmer potential, development and progress under five fundamental criteria as appropriate for the relevant squad:

Attitude and commitment to training (including attendance)
Stroke proficiency
Speed
Stamina
Commitment to competition

C squad is the ‘academy’ squad.  Entry to C squad is at the coaches’ discretion after a trial, which can be arranged by completing the form on the join us page and contacting membership@bottishamswimclub.org.uk.  We look for children aged between 7-12 (occasionally older) who can swim all four strokes, have stamina enough to manage an hour’s training session, and want to swim competitively.  Swimmers stay in this squad until the coaches feel they are ready to move to B squad.  We encourage attendance at open galas for C squad swimmers, and require them to compete for the club in JFL/SFL/County Cup meets if selected, and at the Club Championships.  Attendance at two sessions per week is expected.

B squad is the ‘development’ squad.  Entry to B squad is at the coaches’ discretion on the basis of consideration of the fundamental criteria (above) and the satisfactory completion of a 100m Individual Medley that shows all strokes swum to a good standard and compliance with the FINA rules.  We expect attendance at open galas for B squad swimmers, and require them to compete for the club in JFL/SFL/County Cup meets if selected, and at the Club Championships. Attendance at two sessions per week is expected; in order to progress, swimmers should attend three.

A squad is the ‘top’ squad.  Entry to A squad is at the coaches’ discretion on the basis of consideration of the fundamental criteria (above) and the satisfactory completion of a 200m Individual Medley that shows all strokes swum to a high standard and compliance with the FINA rules.  We require attendance at at least 3 open galas/championships each year for A squad swimmers, and a commitment to competitive swimming must be evidenced by gala attendance before swimmers are invited to join.  We also require swimmers to compete for the club in JFL/SFL/County Cup meets if selected, and at the Club Championships.  Attendance at three sessions per week is expected, and at four is encouraged for optimum performance.

Movement between squads will be considered by the coaches every half term.  Swimmers who are under consideration for movement will be spoken to by the coaches and either invited to trial for the next squad, or ‘flagged’ by being told what they need to do to work towards a trial, or alternatively – if a downwards move is being considered – what they need to do to avoid a downwards move.

Disruptive and disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated in any squad.
