JFL Round Two Newmarket – Gala Report

Round Two of the Junior Fenland League was held on Saturday night, where Bottisham was host to Boston, Cops B, Deepings and Huntingdon Piranhas, all teams that finished well above us in the league last year, Boston being the 2018 league winners.

We had a full team of swimmers, with two new to the JFL. Despite the tough competition and the decreasing light levels, the team achieved eight top-two places and another seven third-place finishes, together with 24PBs.

Our terrific Round Two team comprised:

As our 9s: Dominic and Emma, our only swimmers in this category who consequently swam all the events in their age group for the second round running. They swam four top-three placings and 3PBs between them, with Dominic slicing 7 seconds off his 50 Free. Brilliant!

Our 10Us: Freddie B, our first JFL newbie, who swam a 4 second PB in his 50 Breast; Lewis P, who swam 1PB; Lilla, who finished a fantastic first place in her 50 Breast; and, Izzie, who swam 2PBs.

Our 11Us: Harry and Alec, who both swam just outside their PBs; and, Lucia and Mya, who both swam to a super second place, Lucia in her 50 Breast and Mya in her 50 Free.

Our 12Us: Daniel, who grabbed a PB in his 50 Free; Ithan, who swam the PB of the night, knocking a tremendous 25 seconds off his 100IM before swimming another PB in his 50 Breast; Evie M, our second JFL newbie, who swam three-out-of-three PBs; and, Cassidy, who swam two-out-of-two.

And finally our 13Us: Alex, swimming up an age group to achieve three-out-of-three PBs, including a brilliant 50 Back swim with a time that is faster than the 12U cut off; Andrew, who knocked a noteworthy 9 seconds off his 50 Breast; Arwen, who swam three-out-of-three PBs, coming second place in her 50 Back; and cool-as-a-cucumber Katie, who swam 2PBs to secure two first place finishes and is still just outside the cut-off times – oh yes!

It was good set of results given the very tough competition. We are proud of you all!

Thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes and everyone who came and cheered the team on. A very big thank you to all our officials: Suzy, Nigel, Trish, Vinnie, Patrick and Angharad. Another big thank you to Julie and Pete for marshaling with the PB bag, to Paula and Leigh for manning the door and selling raffle tickets, to Guy for recording and to Coach Ciara. Final thank yous (and extra adjectives for coming even though you weren’t swimming) to the lovely Livia for assisting with the raffle and delivering rhubarb and custards, and the fabulous Freddy M for announcing.

All times are now on SCM, although these results are still subject to scrutiny by the Adjudicator. The full results list is on the Fenland League website and can be found here.

Round Three will be at Newmarket on 8th June against the two Peterborough Teams, First Strokes and St Ives. Might be another tough one…

Cambridge Spring Open Report

Well done to all 21 swimmers who took part in the cambridge Open, we had such a great weekend of results.

Two swimmers in particular went to the Open with one goal in mind, to get a Regional qualifying time. I am extremely pleased to say that both Phoebe and Matteo achieved this goal and qualified for 50m Backstroke, they both swam so well and really pushed for it, a big congratulations to you both.

Now on to the PB’s. Out of 64 races they came away with 44 PBs, with over half of them being 2’s faster or more. Here are the numbers:

1 PB for – Grace, Anna N, Matteo, Lewis P, Ithan and David

2 PB’s for – Anna I-k, Mya, Zubair, Rachel, Justin, Matthew, Freddie B and Alex

3 PBs for – Mauricio and Lilla

4 PBs for – Freya

5 PBs for – Phoebe

7 PBs – Patryk, topping the leader board

There were some medals won which were particularly hard to win due to the meet being aimed for regional qualifiers so a lot of fast swimmers had entered.

Lilla achieved Bronze in 100m Breaststroke

Matteo achieved Bronze in 50m Backstroke

Yvonne Achieved Bronze in 200m Medley

Phoebe achieved Gold in 50m Backstroke

Just when I thought the weekend couldn’t of gone any better I found out we had 10 new club records too….

Yvonne – 50m Fly, 100m Free, 200 Medley, 100m Backstroke

Phoebe – 100m and 50m Backstroke

Matteo – 50m Backstroke

Lilla  – 100m and 50m Breaststroke

Freddie B – 50m Breaststroke

Great work from everyone, in particular Patryk who had a full house of PB’s with all brilliant swims, Phoebe and Matteo for their Regional times and also to Yvonne one of our Uni swimmers who came back to compete.

Thank you Paula, Rachel and Sara for helping with the swimmers and to Youri for helping coach Friday.

JFL Round One Whittlesey – Gala Report

Our team of sixteen swimmers travelled to Whittlesey for the first round of the Junior Fenland League on Saturday night. We had seven swimmers new to the JFL, swimming against some tough and rather loud opposition in March Marlins, Thetford Dolphins, Huntingdon Piranhas and West Norfolk.

Two swimmers had to pull out at the last minute – we hope all will be well with you soon – which meant some last minute shuffling of the team. We had three swimmers swimming all the events in their age group and one swimming up a year. The team achieved a staggering 33 PBs, and seven top-two places.

Our wonderful Round One team comprised:

As our 9Us: Dominic and Emma, who are both new to the JFL and swam all the events in their age group. Dominic swam 3 PBs, including a tremendous 10 seconds PB his 50 Breast to finish a superb second place, while Emma swam a full house of PBs, including a terrific 11 seconds off her 50 Breast to also finish second.

Our 10Us: Lewis P, who swam all the events in his age group and the relay, securing 2 PBs; Lilla, who swam straight through the cut-off in 50 Back to finish first, and came second in her 50 Fly, achieving 2 PBs; and, Izzie, our third JFL newbie, who also swam 2 PBs, coming third in a close 50 Breast race.

Our 11Us: Harry, who swam 2 PBs, knocking a brilliant 4 seconds off his 50 Back; and JFL newbies, Alec and Anna, who both swam 2 PBs and competed in their first squadron relay.

Our 12Us: Lewis K, who swam up an age group to achieve 2 PBs, and won THE raffle prize of the night: Footy Head!; Daniel, who grabbed 2 PBs; Katherine, our sixth JFL newbie, who swam 3 PBs, including a cracking 5 second PB in 50 Free; and Livia, who swam the PB of the night, slicing a staggering 16 seconds off her 100IM and another 6 seconds off her 50 Fly, as she was nudged into second place in the last couple of metres.

And finally our 13Us: Rachel, the last of our JFL newbies, who swam 2 PBS, including an 8 second PB in her 100IM; Andrew, who also swam 2PBs, including a super 6 second PB in his 50 Fly; Sam, who charged through the cut-off for 50 Breast and finished first in his 50 Back; and last, but by no means least, Katie, who is fast running out of events to swim at the JFL, this time swimming through the cut-off for 50 Back to finish first and is now within a second of the 50 Breast cut-off.

It was a fantastic start to the season: well done! We are proud of you all!

A really big thank you to Paula and Karen for marshaling, to Claire, James and Emma L for timekeeping, to Suzy for refereeing, to Coach Karl for coaching, and to Freddy M for helping poolside.

All times are now on SCM, although these results are still subject to scrutiny by the Adjudicator.

As always, Bottisham will be hosting Round Two at Newmarket. So, all raffle donations will be gratefully received, and I will be asking for volunteers shortly, so please watch out for emails!
