JFL Round Three Newmarket – Gala Report

Round Three of the Junior Fenland League was held on Saturday night, where Bottisham swam against hosts First Strokes, both Peterborough teams (Cops A and Cops B) and St Ives, all teams that are well and truly above us in the league and so provided formidable competition.

We had an enthusiastic team of swimmers, with three new to the JFL, four swimming all the events in their age group and two swimming up a year. Our swimmers held their own and raced their own races to achieve not only 25 PBs, but two top-two places and another four third-place finishes.

Our determined Round Three team comprised:

As our 9s: Emma, who, as our only girl in this category, yet again swam all the events in her age group, including a PB in her 50 Back.

Our 10Us: Lewis P, who swam a PB in his 50 Breast for the second JFL running; Eddie, who swam the PB of the night, knocking a tremendous 13 seconds off his 50 Fly, as well as another 5 seconds off his 50 Free and finished third in both events; and, the very smiley Leah, our first JFL newbie, who swam all the events in her age group, including the squadron relay, to earn 3 dips in the PB bag.

Our 11Us: Alec, who swam a brilliant 8 second PB in his 50 Free; Lewis K, who swam a PB in his 50 Breast, swam 50 Fly one-and-a-half times, and in true form lost his goggles diving in for the relay; Anoushka, who sliced 4 seconds off her 50 Free PB and finished third in both her events; and, Lucia, who swam a brilliant 9 second PB in her 50 Fly to finish a fantastic first place.

Our 12Us: Joseph, who stepped in at the last minute to swim all the events in his age group and grabbed 4 PBs; and, our other two JFL newbies swimming in their first gala, Soojung, swimming three-out-of-three PBs, and Jenny, who swam her first relay and a PB in her 50 Free, finishing in a superb second place.

And finally our 13Us: Andrew, who swam all the events in his age group and bagged 2 PBs; and our girls, both swimming up an age group, Livia, who sliced a super 6 seconds off her 50 Breast, and Ellen, who swam three-out-of-three PBs and drenched me twice in the process.

There was not only some great racing, but also some close races despite the really tough competition. We are so proud of you all!

A very big thank you to David and Beth for marshaling and supervising the PB bag, to Jamie for timekeeping, to Coach Ciara, and, to Freddy M for helping out poolside.

All times are now on SCM, although these results are still subject to scrutiny by the Adjudicator. The full results list has now been posted on the Fenland League website and can be found here.

Round Four is on 13th July when the opposition will be a bit more of a mixed bag. It’s competition weekend with the Jeanne Barker also happening, so we need to do a little bit of juggling to finalise the team. Please watch out for emails.
