JFL Round One Whittlesey – Gala Report

Our team of sixteen swimmers travelled to Whittlesey for the first round of the Junior Fenland League on Saturday night. We had seven swimmers new to the JFL, swimming against some tough and rather loud opposition in March Marlins, Thetford Dolphins, Huntingdon Piranhas and West Norfolk.

Two swimmers had to pull out at the last minute – we hope all will be well with you soon – which meant some last minute shuffling of the team. We had three swimmers swimming all the events in their age group and one swimming up a year. The team achieved a staggering 33 PBs, and seven top-two places.

Our wonderful Round One team comprised:

As our 9Us: Dominic and Emma, who are both new to the JFL and swam all the events in their age group. Dominic swam 3 PBs, including a tremendous 10 seconds PB his 50 Breast to finish a superb second place, while Emma swam a full house of PBs, including a terrific 11 seconds off her 50 Breast to also finish second.

Our 10Us: Lewis P, who swam all the events in his age group and the relay, securing 2 PBs; Lilla, who swam straight through the cut-off in 50 Back to finish first, and came second in her 50 Fly, achieving 2 PBs; and, Izzie, our third JFL newbie, who also swam 2 PBs, coming third in a close 50 Breast race.

Our 11Us: Harry, who swam 2 PBs, knocking a brilliant 4 seconds off his 50 Back; and JFL newbies, Alec and Anna, who both swam 2 PBs and competed in their first squadron relay.

Our 12Us: Lewis K, who swam up an age group to achieve 2 PBs, and won THE raffle prize of the night: Footy Head!; Daniel, who grabbed 2 PBs; Katherine, our sixth JFL newbie, who swam 3 PBs, including a cracking 5 second PB in 50 Free; and Livia, who swam the PB of the night, slicing a staggering 16 seconds off her 100IM and another 6 seconds off her 50 Fly, as she was nudged into second place in the last couple of metres.

And finally our 13Us: Rachel, the last of our JFL newbies, who swam 2 PBS, including an 8 second PB in her 100IM; Andrew, who also swam 2PBs, including a super 6 second PB in his 50 Fly; Sam, who charged through the cut-off for 50 Breast and finished first in his 50 Back; and last, but by no means least, Katie, who is fast running out of events to swim at the JFL, this time swimming through the cut-off for 50 Back to finish first and is now within a second of the 50 Breast cut-off.

It was a fantastic start to the season: well done! We are proud of you all!

A really big thank you to Paula and Karen for marshaling, to Claire, James and Emma L for timekeeping, to Suzy for refereeing, to Coach Karl for coaching, and to Freddy M for helping poolside.

All times are now on SCM, although these results are still subject to scrutiny by the Adjudicator.

As always, Bottisham will be hosting Round Two at Newmarket. So, all raffle donations will be gratefully received, and I will be asking for volunteers shortly, so please watch out for emails!
