County Champs 2018 – sessions 1-4

BSC just had a great weekend at Whittlesey for the County Champs – congratulations to all our swimmers, who all did remarkably well in this tough competition! The small but perfectly formed team was made up of Anouk, Leila, Faith, Lauren, Jack H, Nick, Kieran, Yvonne and Justine. It’s no mean feat to achieve county qualification, and we’re so proud of each and every swimmer who made the long journey into Fenland to swim these championships over a really long couple of days. Well done to all of you.

The first weekend of counties is always a bit of an odd affair, but the team got stuck in. Huge credit for some amazing performances, particularly from Leila, Lauren, Kieran and Yvonne all swimming in their first county champs here, and Justine for her brave 200 back against national-level competition! There were some amazing swims: Nick’s 50 fly final, Lauren’s 50 breast final, Faith’s 50 breast heat, Jack’s second race of three in the 50 breast, Anouk’s final of the 100 fly…. but the weekend really belonged to Nick this time, as you shall see.

PB congratulations go to Anouk and Lauren each with one, Jack and Faith each with two, and Nick with a fantastic four. The same swimmers also represented our county finalists: Nick swam in four finals (100 back, 50 back, 100 breast and 50 fly), Jack in two (50 and 100 breast), Faith in two (50 breast and 100 fly) and there was one each for Lauren (50 breast) and Anouk (100 fly).

The club records also tumbled: 6 went in total. Anouk improved her age 11 100 fly record in her final. Jack took the age 13 50 breast record with a brilliant swim in the swim-off for a place in the final, knocking nearly 2 seconds off a record that had stood since 2010, and more than that off his own PB! Faith improved her age 13 50 breast and 100 fly records with the fastest ever times swum by a BSC girl in each. And Nick shattered the age 13 50 and 100 back records that had stood since 2009, with a couple of truly remarkable swims!

In terms of medals – Nick achieved two silvers in the 100 backstroke and the 50 fly, and a bronze in the 50 backstroke; Faith achieved bronze in the 50 breaststroke.  This is already BSC’s best medal haul at Counties for a long while. Jack, Faith and Anouk together achieved a pile of 4th place finishes, showing there’s still room for more.

Finally, well done to Faith who achieved 2018 Regional Summer Championships qualification in her 50m breaststroke!  Nick and Jack are each just a smidgeon off regional standards too – remarkable achievements, all!

Thanks go to Trish and Patrick for judging and to Heather for poolside helping – also to all parents who were willing to do the long drive!
