Well done to all swimmers, and thanks to everyone for coming along, and particularly to Carol for organising all of the awards and medals.

If you have any suggestions for how to improve our annual presentations evening, please let me know. Onwards to 2016!

County Champs – last weekend report

On Saturday, a rather depleted band of county swimmers had another go at Parkside: sadly Thomas M couldn’t join us due to injury, Thomas C was otherwise engaged at county-level cross country, and an epic nosebleed starting in the second session warmup put paid to Faith’s intended evening 100m backstroke effort.  However, Jacob L, Faith (earlier on), Pippa, Jack and Joel carried the flag.

The girls’ 50m breaststroke turned up some of our best county performances of the year – Faith took nearly a second and a half off her PB and club record set in December, and came 4th in her age group at 42.79 seconds. Awesome! (And perhaps what caused the subsequent nosebleed?) Pippa swam almost exactly to her PB and club reccord, winning her a place in the final of her age group – our only Bottisham final of the year – and coming 8th overall. Fabulous swimming, girls.

As for the boys, Jacob, Jack and Joel all swam just off their PBs.  Jacob came 12th in his age group in the boys’ 100m backstroke; Jack came 10th in his age group and Joel came 11th in his first ever county swim, both in the 50m breaststroke.  Well done boys!

And so to the relays….

What a day!  Official results can be found here on the Cambs ASA website; I’m attaching (at the bottom of the post) a full excel analysis of the results with individual split times  so you can find out exactly how you did. As always with relays, our overall position doesn’t tell the full story – so here we go.

We competed in all 19 races (not every team did, and at least one Cambs ASA club did not compete at all).  We scored points in 15 of those races (4 DQs).  In only 4 races did we come last, whatever it might have seemed. There were a fair amount of DQs all round!

And so to the roll of honour…

Team performances:

In 8 races, teams beat their seed time, which is the combination of all swimmers’ PBs in the strokes they were swimming – quite a feat.  So well done to –
Mixed Open Medley Team – Justine, Pippa, Alex B and Aedan;
Girls’ 11/u free team – Luna, Anouk, Katie and Holly W;
Boys’ 13/u medley team – Nick, Jack, Tom C and Samuel;
Boys’ 15/u free team – George, Joel, Ethan and Connor WHO ALL GOT PBs/best times and were the only team where this happened;
Women’s Open medley team – Justine, Lauren, Megan B and Pippa;
Girls’15/u medley team – Ellen, Molly, Ella G and Holly R;
Men’s Open free team – Aedan, Alex B, Colin and Thomas H; and
Women’s Open free team – Megan B, Sophie, Justine and Pippa.

I foolishly promised prizes to any team that managed to beat their seed time. Due to the number of you that managed it, these are likely to be Haribo/similarly-based, and I will distribute them at the AGM!  Well done.

Individual performances:

In total, 41 swims beat their entry times: well done to Josh J, Ellen, Justine, Aedan, Freddy M, Ryan, Luna, Anouk, Holly W, Nick, Jack, Tom C, George, Joel, Ethan, Connor, Thomas H, Lauren, Honey, Josh V, Caitlin, Molly, Ella G, Holly R, Colin, Sophie, and Pippa.

Because of the nature of relays, only the swimmer of the first leg is eligible for an official PB/club record.  From 19 races we had 6 ‘official’ PBs: three on freestyle, three on backstroke. Two of these were club records.  So well done to Aedan, Justine and Nick for their PBs in 50 back and Josh J, George and Luna for their PBs in 50 free.  Aedan set the new 17 year old club record at 31.37 secs, nicking it from big brother Finn, and Nick has improved his own club record for 11 year olds at 39.52 secs, his first time under 40 seconds.  Well done!

The WOW list for those whose performances require a special mention:
Justine, who swam 3 races, and beat her entry time each time in both strokes, free and back
Thomas H, who swam 3 races and beat his entry time in both strokes, free and back, remarkably exactly equalling it in his other freestyle race
Aedan, who beat his entry time in both freestyle and backstroke and got a new club record in back with a half-second PB
Lauren, who beat her entry time in both breaststroke and freestyle and swam over a second quicker than PB in breaststroke
Josh J, who beat his freestyle entry time twice despite being injured and set a new PB
Luna and Caitlin – first time under 40 seconds for 50 freestyle, Caitlin swimming nearly two and a half seconds quicker than her PB
Anouk – taking over 8 seconds off her 50 free time, amazing progress!
Nicholas – new club record and nearly a second off his 50 back PB
Tom C – over a second off his 50 fly time
George – a clear 3 seconds off his 50 free PB
Joel – over a second and a half quicker than his 50 free PB
Ethan – nearly 6 seconds quicker than his 50 free PB – get that boy to a licensed gala!
Connor – nearly 2 seconds quicker than his 50 free PB
Honey, who swam over 5 seconds quicker than her 50 breast PB, brilliant!
Josh V, who swam over 2 seconds quicker than his 50 free PB, and
Colin and Sophie – nearly 3 seconds and half a second respectively quicker than their 50 free PBs, despite both swimming towards the end of the programme: awesome team players.

Bottisham SC is a very special swimming club. We can’t give you the pool time that the others have at their disposal, but we don’t require you to stop doing everything else you love in order to swim with us. The team spirit poolside at the County Relays made me very proud to be part of the club, and I hope you all were too. All swimmers should be really proud of what they achieved!

It’s clear to me that you all swim better when you swim together – this was evident at club champs too. The more of you that come to galas, the better you will all perform. Remember the entry forms for Newmarket need to be in by next Sunday – badger your friends and teammates to sign up!

Finally, special thanks go to the following: Alex B – our secret weapon – you were awesome. Thank you for being our super-sub. Ali and Paul, thanks for poolside helping. Carol, Trish and David – thank you for judging/judge-training on behalf of the club. Coach Karl, at your first county relays, you were fab. Molly and Megan B, you were great with the little ones – thank you. And to Pippa, who claims that this was her last gala – thank you for all your help on the day, and all you have given to the club over the years. Don’t you dare be a stranger.

Karl’s backstroke wisdom

Over the last week Karl has been working with the swimmers on backstroke technique.  He’s asked me to post these 4 images showing that there is no one single position for ‘take your marks’ for a backstroke start: everyone needs to find the position that is most effective for them.  Please pass them on to your swimmers. Thanks!
