Gala Report: Newmarket April Open 2018

We had a fabulous weekend at the Newmarket Open. Our small but perfectly formed band of swimmers got 33 PBs from 66 swims – not bad at all!

At the top of the PB tree we had Anouk, again, with seven – and it would have been more if a shoulder twinge hadn’t forced her withdrawal from a few races. Well done Anouk, and make sure you recover in good time for Regionals!
Yvonne and Jack B both came away with four PBs – what an achievement!
Rebekah, Nick and Patryk all achieved a brilliant three PBs; Matt, Faith, Arwen and junior coach Youri each got a terrific two; and there was one each for Emily, Mya and Luna – well done to all of you. A special mention to Phoebe E who did a great swim in her 50 back to come 6th in her age group, and to Jacob who just missed out on a medal in the 200 breast.

Our medal haul was fabulous: Nick got eight in all – golds in the 200IM, 50 back and 200 back, silvers in the 100 back, 50 fly and 100 IM, and bronze in the 50 breast and 50 free.  Faith got six – golds in the 100 fly and 100 IM, silvers in all of the breaststroke events and a bronze in the 50 fly.  Yvonne got three bronzes in 200 breast, 200 back and 400 IM; Jack B got a silver in the 200 breaststroke and Patryk got a bronze in the 200 breaststroke.  Excellent work!

New club records: one swimmer swept their age group this time…. congratulations to Yvonne, who took no less than six club records in the 18+ category – the 200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100IM, 200IM and 400IM! That’s quite a legacy – well done.  Anouk set new age 11 records in the 50 free, 200 back, 100 IM and 200 IM; Faith lowered the club’s all-time girls’ 100 fly and 200 breast records each by another couple of seconds; and Nick set a new 50 back record at age 14.

Finally, two pieces of big news: congratulations to Nick for achieving his fourth regional qualifying time in the 50m backstroke with a lovely clean swim this time(!); and also congratulations to Youri for becoming the newest member of the sub-30 second 50m free club at last!

All results have been uploaded.

Thank you to all those parents who helped in the hall, to Vinny and Patrick who officiated all weekend, and to coaches Karl and Youri. The next gala is the West Suffolk May meet. See you poolside!

JFL Round One Newmarket – Gala Report

We started the 2018 JFL season on Saturday at Newmarket, competing against teams from Deepings, Huntingdon, Mildenhall and Thetford. Our team of 15 swimmers, including several swimming in their first JFL, were Lilla, Mady, Grace S, Amy, Livia, Megan, Esme, Freya, Katie, Lewis K, Ithan, Andrew, Sam, Freddy and Ollie. A special mention to the four swimmers who swam up an age group: Katie, Freya, Megan and Esme. Well done girls!

From 38 individual swims, we had a fantastic 25 PBs:

A tremendous three PBs for Lilla, our youngest member of the JFL team, who swam all the events in her age group, coming first in her 50m breaststroke and second in all her other races … absolutely brilliant!

A terrific two PBs for Lewis K (who also swam all the events in his age group, swimming his 50m breaststroke without goggles, and setting PBs in both backstroke and free: fantastic!), Grace (who sliced a whopping 13 seconds off her fly time and came second in her breaststroke with a superb 6 second PB: awesome!), Amy, Megan and Esme (all first time JFL swimmers), Livia (who knocked an amazing 6 seconds off her fly time), Katie (who came second in both her races, swimming up an age group), Freya and Ollie.

A wonderful one PB for Mady and Ithan (both first time JFL swimmers), Sam and Andrew.

Fantastic swimming all of you: well done!

A huge thank you to Jamie Kincaid for timekeeping, to Karen Kincaid and Mary O’Neill for helping out poolside and keeping hold of the now seriously depleted PB Bag, and of course to Coach Karl and Coach Ciara.

All times are now on SCM. Full results can be found here, although these are still subject to scrutiny by the Adjudicator. We will be hosting Round Two at Newmarket on April 21st. Invitations will be going out shortly, so please check your emails.

County Champs 2018 – sprints and relays

Well done to the Bottisham swimmers who competed last Saturday at the last two sessions of the County Championships.

The individual events were the 50m freestyle and 100m Individual Medley. We had a great team consisting of Tashie, Mary B, Phoebe E, Luna, Ellen H, Justine, Holly, Ellen C, Yvonne, Anouk, Faith, Nick, Jack H, George, and Kieran. In the 50m free there were PBs for Mary B, Luna, Tashie, Ellen H, Justine, Kieran, George, Nick, Faith and Anouk; Anouk reached the final of the girls’ age 12 event and swam brilliantly to get 4th place, her (joint) highest finish in the championships and a new club record! Nick went sub-30 seconds for the first time in his race and finished 10th in his age group; Faith also got a club record and finished 13th overall.  In the 100m IM, Luna, Justine, George, Nick, Faith and Anouk all got PBs: Faith was the highest placed finisher in 5th, lowering her all-time girls’ record again, with Nick 6th – a matter of tenths away from Thomas M’s age group record! – and Anouk 7th. Congratulations all swimmers.

We were thrilled to be able to put a team forward for every single event in the County Relays, and everyone swam really well and did the club proud.  We didn’t win; but I bet we had the most fun of all the clubs there. Well done to all swimmers.  Thanks to everyone for turning out and braving the chaos of Parkside to support the club: thanks also to Fay and Sam for team managing, to Vinny, Trish, Emma and Patrick for judging, and to the fabulous Coach Karl. Let’s do it all again next year!
