Breaststroke Masterclass – Thursday 1 October, 7-8pm

As announced at the Club BBQ, Dave has arranged for former Olympic swimmer Christine Illman to come and teach a breaststroke masterclass for Bottisham Swimming Club.  This will take place at Bottisham on Thursday 1 October, between 7-8pm.  All club members and parents are welcome to come, watch and listen.

About Christine

Christine competed for the GB team at the Olympics in Munich in 1972 and in Montreal in 1976.  Her other achievements include winning a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke  in the 1970 Commonwealth Games and being British national champion in 1972. She finished fourth in the World Championships in 1973, was US Colleges champion in breaststroke over all distances, and was at one time the British and Commonwealth record holder.

Christine was PE teacher and Swim Coach at the Leys school for 20 years before her retirement in 2010.  She was involved in setting up the Elite squad at the City of Cambridge Swimming Club where she remains Club President, and there’s even a rumour that she spent some time as a coach at Bottisham SC too!

About the Masterclass

Due to constraints on pool space and the fact that this slot is a mixed B/A squad session, we will be running the session as follows:

  • C Squad members are welcome and encouraged to attend.  You can be poolside watching and listening to Christine, and watching the swimmers in the pool.  Unfortunately there will not be space for you to swim.
  • B Squad – You will have two lanes of the pool, as usual.  We will be restricting swimmers to 8 per lane during Christine’s session so if there are more of you than that, we will take turns.
  • A Squad – those who usually attend on Thursdays from 7-9pm will have two lanes as usual between 7-8pm during Christine’s session.  Other A squad swimmers who do not usually attend on Thursdays are welcome to come at 7pm to listen to and watch Christine.  You may enter the pool with the rest of A squad at 8pm (when B squad leave) and swim until 9pm if you would like to practice what you have heard.

We hope that you will all make an effort to attend to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to hear from a true breaststroke master.  Any queries, please speak to Dave or another of the coaches.
