18-05-2010Green Day [Posted by: Bryan]

Bottisham Swimming Club is playing host to two Green Days in sponsor of the charity MAGPAS.

MAGPAS is a lifesaving charity, essentially made up of two parts. The Emergency Medical Team are voluntary Paramedics and Doctors whom are highly trained by MAGPAS and mobilised on the Air Ambulance and also the Rapid Response Vehicle. On top of this they also train and co-ordinate the Community First Responders scheme within the county, which allows them to train the average public member in Advanced First Aid, to which they respond to 999 calls within a certain call critea.

The days of which will be 'Green', will be Sunday 23rd and Wednesday 26th of May. Wear something green and donate a £1 towards MAGPAS, Swimmers will need to wear this in the water so preferably the something 'green' will be a Shirt.

All Staff, swimmers and parents would be invited to take part.

 Have a good Green Day!

23-02-2010No Swimming Sunday 7th March [Posted by: bryan]

Hiya,

I hope everyone is well and that your year is going well so far!

Due to the social evening taking place, on the 7th March (Sunday) there will be no swimming for any of the 2 and a half hours.

To those joining in the social evening, the Pizza and Bowling has been booked. You need to meet us within the entrance of the Bowling at Cambridge Leisure Park (the address is at the bottom of this newsletter) at 5:30pm on the 7th March Sunday, this is so we can get shoes sorted as well as lane organisation (something that should be very familiar by now!).

The event is expected to carry on until aprox 8:15pm.  We will have first aiders and an adult ratio of at least 5:1 children to adult.

Hope your all well,

Bryan C

25-01-2010Social Event - Cut Off 4th Febuary [Posted by: Bryan]

Social Event 2010

Happy New Year from Bottisham Swimming Club!

As suggested on my last letter to swimmers and parents in November, I was going about trying to organise a social event for the swimmers that all would enjoy at as low cost as possible.

The date that I’ve come up with is Sunday 7th March, which is just before all our main competition starts, and most importantly before everyone goes away for holidays at Easter.

The price of the event will be £11.00 per swimmer and will include two games of bowling, food and drink.

The event will be held at Cambridge Leisure Park, and the exact meeting point within the building will be confirmed prior to the event taking place. The time I believe will be starting roughly at 6pm, finishing at 8pm, however the exact time of meet will be sent out after we’ve booked everything.

Please fill out the form (again if you have before) with payment, if the event doesn’t have a good response refunds will be given.

Best regards

Bryan Carson

17-01-2010AGM and Fun Gala Sunday 24 January [Posted by: johnson2]
The Bottisham Swimming Club AGM will be held at IVC on Sunday 24 January, starting at about 4.15 PM.  The formal part of the meeting will be kept short and will be followed by presenation of the Age Group Trophies from the Club Champs.
A Fun Gala will replace the regular training for the Sunday Evening.  The programme will be as follows:
5.00 - 5.35        Warm-up and Fun Gala for width session swimmers.

5.15                 Warm-up for length session swimmers in the shallow end
5.40 - 6.45        Warm-up and Fun Gala for the length session swimmers.
All times are approximate.  The fun gala is an informal team competition, but requires a lot of organisation.  It becomes very competitive, and we need adult team managers (prefer 2) for each team.  This is a great opportunity to get involved in the action.  If you do not mind getting splashed please head for poolside and offer to help.
The Event will be sponsored by Cadbury's.

The Thursday session is an all pay session and costs £2.50 per swim, payable at the end of each month.

12-01-2010Freestyle video - worth a watch! [Posted by: cjs30]

I came across this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2n_AceCr-c) YouTube video, and thought you might be interested. It makes a serious point with a good deal of humour. The message is simple - to swim freestyle quickly decreasing drag is essential. Whilst the video does not contain any drills to improve your stroke, it does highlight some things you might want to think about. Enjoy and learn!

Just a quick reminder that we are holding a tumble turns night this Thursday, 10th December at Bottisham 19:00 to 20:00.
The cost is £1 and ALL swimmers are welcome regardless of swim group. The session will be an excellent opportunity to improve on those horrid turns.

01-12-2009Swimmers can run too! [Posted by: cjs30]
Congratulations to the many Bottisham Swimming Club swimmers who took part at the Royston Heath Schools' Cross Country event. I lost count of how many of you took part. I saw Adam Dark, Sophie Darling, Joshua Sambrook, Harriet Walker, Lucy Loughlan, George Schwiening, Joe Biggs and a few others who's names I can't recall....and lots of you finished in very high positions beating some very serious looking runners. Well done! Don't forget that if you want to remain injury free for running, swimming is the best form of exercise!
29-11-2009Gala 1 results now available! [Posted by: cjs30]

04-10-2009New Graphing feature on website! [Posted by: cjs30]

One of the benefits of making a members account of the BottishamSwimClub website is access to our extensive database of times. Now we have an exciting new feature that allows the times to be plotted against either age or date. You can see directly how you or other swimmers compare at the same age as some of our older swimmers. I have attached a screen shot showing a comparison between Ciara and Frances for 50m fly. Both are excellent fly swimmers - whilst Frances is a good few years younger than Ciara you can see that she is on track to be just as fast!

29-06-2009Anglian League Success on the 27th June! [Posted by: cjs30]

I have added the results from the Anglian League at St Ives on Saturday to the club database (make an account to access them). There were 23 PBs out of 30 individual events (and four events in which the cut-offs were broken). It was an excellent performance. Although we came third, we were swimming against clubs at the top of the league. There were so many outstanding performances - especially from four swimmers who competed in events and distances that they have never swum before. Amongst the highlights were seeing Harriet Walker (11 years old) swim up in the Open age group 50m Fly (40.78s) and then doing her first 100m Fly in the 13/U age group (01:37.20). Brilliant!

Other fantasitic performances were from Verity Clarke taking 4.5s off her 200 IM time, Joshua Sambrook taking 3.7s off his 50m Back, Frances Pulford took 3s off her 100m Fly and her brother Dom knocking 5.1s off his already fast 200 IM taking him below the cut-off. Finn Conroy took 5.6s off his 100m Fly, Oly Walker 1.8s off his 100m Breast also taking him below the cut-off. Of the few swims that weren't PBs, there were excellent performances - bettering already fast times in the post exam season is not easy. I was again impressed by your attitude - you are all great and it was an honour to be associated with you. Great behaviour, tremendous competitors, wonderful spirit and great team mates. You are a real credit to your club.

PS Many thanks too to your parents for help with team management, timekeeping, judging and not least chauffeuring!

22-06-2009Impington Pool Closure [Posted by: johnson2]

Impington Pool is Closed until Tuesday 30 June due to a Swine Flu closure at IVC.  As a result there will be no BSC sessions on Sunday 28 or Monday 29 June.

 Sessions at Bottisham remain unaffected.

13-05-2009Cambridge Open Meet - 19th July [Posted by: cjs30]

The Cambridge Open Meet is a popular competition in mid-July and we usually have a handful of swimmers attending. It is a good introduction to gala swimming - although it can be a bit intimidating for younger swimmers. There are upper cut-offs which will exclude some of our faster swimmers. If you would like to swim please contact Jo Pulford (jlpulford@aol.com). The deadline for entries is 17th June. Entry pack

06-05-2009Summer 2009 fees now due! [Posted by: cjs30]

This term runs from 15th April through to Wednesday 15th July (inclusive).

This is a 13 week term and the fees are £5.50 per week making a total of £71.50 per swimmer.

If you pay by Sunday 31st May there is an early payment reduction of £5 making £66.50 per swimmer. Please pay promptly - not only does it save you money, it also saves us having to pester you!

As you probably already know, the club is run by volunteers and our main costs are fixed - the hiring of the pools. The Clubs continuing survival is dependent upon us collecting fees from all of our swimmers - even three swimmers failing to pay is enough to turn a balanced budget into a substantial yearly loss. Bottisham Swimming Club remains one of the cheapest swimming clubs in the area (possibly the cheapest) - we would like to keep it that way.

Payment is best made by cheque to - Bottisham Swimming Club - please put your swimmer(s) name on the reverse and put it in an envelope with your email address on the front. Payment can be given to me - or any of the poolside helpers.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me - Christof cjs30@cam.ac.uk

Greetings,
Christof

There is no swimming this Bank Holiday Monday - Impington is closed.
19-04-2009Excellent performances at the Anglian League! [Posted by: cjs30]
Well done to the Anglian League squad for an excellent performance on Saturday at Whittlesey. Whilst we came 4th it was only by the smallest of margins. The team was a credit to the club. The times are in the club database - there were 21 PBs and 3 other times that would have been PBs if they had not been DQed! In other words 80% of the times were at the PB level - a tremendous result. Keep up the good work!
09-04-2009New Swimming Session Times! [Posted by: cjs30]

There is a change of swimming times for the Summer '09 term. Full details are here. The early session has returned with the addition of small group coaching for some of our older swimmers who need to brush-up particular elements of their strokes. If you are unsure which session to attend please email to either the Chair, Head Coach, JFL team manager or the Membership Secretary. In general Session A & B swimmers should stick with their existing groups unless they hear otherwise.

31-03-2009No swimming 12th & 13th April [Posted by: cjs30]
The last swimming session of the Spring term is on the 8th April. Swimming restarts on the 15th April (no swimming on Easter Sunday or Monday).
29-03-2009Fenland Open Meet (deadline 10th April) [Posted by: cjs30]
There is an 'Open Meet' competition on Sunday 24th May 2009 and it would be great to have some representation from our club - we have a lot of talented swimmers.  The 'Open Meet' competitions are one level up from the gala events that many of you are already taking part in.There are already four or five children who wish to take part and are in the process of completing their entry forms. If you are interested in this competition, please complete the entry from and send it off by 10th April (details are on this PDF). It costs £3.50 per race.
29-03-2009Triumph at the County Championships [Posted by: cjs30]
Congratulations to Dominic Pulford, Chris Haydock and George Schwiening who performed brilliantly at the Cambridgeshire County Championships. Dominic got silver in 50m and 100m backstroke and in the 50m fly. He also got bronze in the 100m IM. Chris Haydock got bronze in the 50m back and George got silver in the 1500m freestyle. Getting medal positions against the best swimmers in the Cambridgeshire is really superb. Great swimming!
18-01-2009Fees held at 2008 levels - but, now due....... [Posted by: cjs30]

Bottisham Swimming Club Spring 2009 Fees:

This term runs from 7th January through to Wednesday 8th April (inclusive). It is a long term.

Despite rises in both pool and ASA subscription fees we are holding our fees at 2008 levels.

This is a 13 week term and the fees are £5.50 per week making a total of £71.50 per swimmer. There is also a £25 Annual Club Membership Fee - this fee covers ASA registrations and offsets some of the costs associated with running our Club Championships. The total fee is therefore £96.50 per swimmer.

However, if you pay by Sunday 8th February there is an early payment reduction of £5 making £91.50 per swimmer. Please pay promptly - not only does it save you money, it also saves us having to pester you!

As you probably already know, the club is run by volunteers and our main costs are fixed - the hiring of the pools. The Club's continuing survival is dependent upon us collecting fees from all of our swimmers - even three swimmers failing to pay is enough to turn a balanced budget into a substantial yearly loss.

29-12-2008Message from New Chair! [Posted by: cjs30]

Happy New Year to all Swimmers, Supporters and Coaches.

I hope your sprints are all PB's and your races victorious.

On another note, Mark Lavers has informed the club that, due to pressure of work, he has to resign from the club. Mark will formally resign at the AGM in January. I would like to thank Mark for the huge contribution that he has made to the club over many years, as Head Coach, Coach, Team Manager and Talent Scout.

Chris Loughlan has agreed to take over as Head Coach. Chris has helped to coach the younger swimmers through 2008 and is developing a new training plan for the entire club. I am sure that you will all join me in wishing both Mark and Chris the very best for their respective endeavours.

Happy New Year

Ashley Johnson

24-09-2008Autumn 2008 Fees [Posted by: cjs30]

Bottisham Swimming Club Autumn 2008 Fees:

This term runs from 7th September through to Sunday 14th December (inclusive).

This is a 14 week term and the fees are £5.50 per week making a total of £77 per swimmer. The increase in fees of 50p per week is due to increases in the Pool charges - as you will be well aware there have been substantial increases in heating costs recently. We are attempting to absorb some of the pool fee increases. If you pay by Sunday 19th October there is an early payment reduction of £5 making £72 per swimmer. Please pay promptly - not only does it save you money, it also saves us having to pester you!

As you probably already know, the club is run by volunteers and does not make any profit.  Its continuing survival is dependent upon us collecting fees from all of our swimmers.

Payment is best made by cheque to - Bottisham Swimming Club - please put your swimmer(s) name on the reverse and put it in an envelope with your email address on the front. Payment can be given to me - or any of the poolside helpers.

In aid of this year’s Sports Relief we will be hosting a sponsored swim-a-thon on Wednesday 12th March at Bottisham swimming pool. And we would like as many swimmers and parents to get involved. The aim is for swimmers to swim a mile of the pool (64 Lengths), or for older swimmers as many miles as you can!

6.30pm - 7.00pm is a normal swim session for our younger swimmers
7.00pm - 9pm for older swimmers and parents and coaches wanting to swim.

Turn up when you want to, announce yourselves to the lane coach and start swimming. There will be a prize for each age group for the swimmer who swims the furthest and one for who raises the most money. Please download the sponsor form and get fundraising! There will also be paper copies available to collect at training sessions. We will also need as many parents as possible on the night to help count!

03-02-2008Results of Time Trial Session 3 3rd Feb 2008 [Posted by: cjs30]

 Dear All,

Here are the results of the time trial in the 3rd Session on Sunday 3rd February, 2008. Well done everyone - especially those who managed the full set!

The timings are not terribly accurate - and certainly cannot go into our database (sorry if we have made any mistakes). You should be able to knock a good few seconds off these times under race conditions. One reason for doing these races was to get you thinking about what you need to improve. Take a look at the 50m splits. Was your first length too slow? Was your second length a lot slower than your first? A marked (>5s) slowing on the second 50m may indicate that your fitness level is not yet as good as it could be. Working hard over the next month can change that - it is an easy way to knock many seconds off a 100m race! Another thing worth considering is your turns. Were they all smooth and fast? Were you worried about them before the race? Did you wonder whether you should tumble or not? If you have any concerns about your turns then practice them! If you can't turn confidently in your swim sessions, then they are almost certainly going to cause you problems in a race. Banish those demons - swim and tumble 100% - your body and brain will love you for it!

Well done!

Christof

17-01-2008Fees received now visible when you log-in. [Posted by: cjs30]
When you log-in to the Bottisham Swimming Club website the My details button (at the top of the screen) now lists the payments we have received from you. This information comes directly from our Membership records database. Fees are entered into the database within 48 hours of receiving them. All fees from, and including Autumn 2007 are listed.
14-01-2008Swimming Club Fees: Spring 2008 Fees: 6th January to 31st March [Posted by: cjs30]

The Bottisham Swimming Club Fees for Spring Term 2008 are £85 minus an early payment reduction of £5 (i.e. £80 per swimmer if payment is received by Sunday 3rd February). We prefer payment by cheque, made payable to Bottisham Swimming Club. Please write the name(s) of the swimmer(s) on the reverse of the cheque and put it in an envelope addressed to Christof (Membership Secretary). Could you also put your email address on the envelope so that we can acknowledge receipt of your money. I will be at most of the swim sessions (except the earliest one) to collect the money - if you can't find me, you can give the envelope to a poolside helper or a coach and they will pass it on to me.

Please try and pay promptly - not only does it save you money, it also saves us having to pester you!

The fee comprises of £25 Club Membership Fee (which includes either Cat 1 or 2 ASA Registration) and the training fee, which is set at £5 per week ( 6th January to 31st March - 12 weeks x £5 = £60).

For dates please see the club website: www.bottishamswimclub.org.uk

All parents (and swimmers) are encouraged to make an account on the website. This gives you access to the database of swim times. In the next few months we will be adding additional functionality including the ability to see the fees paid in.

Greetings and all the best for the New Year,

Christof

14-01-2008Annual Achievement Certificates available for collection [Posted by: cjs30]

For those swimmers and parents who didn't make the AGM, the Annual Achievement Certificates are available for collection at the swim sessions.

The certificates are slightly different from previous years. The most obvious difference is that they are yellow! But, more importantly as well as showing the swimmer's Personal Best times they also show any improvement (seconds faster) since the end of 2006 (i.e. the calendar year). Of course if this was the first year they swam a particular distance and stroke no improvement is shown - but next year there will be one!

Well done to all our swimmers - you are all great! Swimming quickly takes a lot of work and we are impressed by your performance.

Keep it up and the sky is the limit - you can be as fast as you want to be! Set yourself a target and go for it!

For all those who have made the - I must be more organized! - New Year's resolution (or had it made for you).

Here is a list of all of our confirmed 'League' galas:

http://www.bottishamswimclub.org.uk/cgi-bin/Calcium310.pl?CalendarName=Default&Op=ShowIt&NavType=Relative&Date=2008/9/20&Amount=Year&Type=Condensed

We are now in three Leagues. The Junior Fenland League is for swimmers aged 9-13 (Mark Nunn is the team manager). The Anglian League and the Senior Fenland League (team management shared between Christof Schwiening and Frances Johnston) are for older swimmers (12/13 and above).

Those swimmers selected by the Team Managers will be contacted directly. If you (or your swimmer) would like to take part, and has not been invited, please speak to the team manager. The selection process is not just based on existing swim times, but also on trying to give promising swimmers an opportunity to compete.

Whilst swimming is mainly an individual sport, these League Galas rely on a good team performance - we are very grateful to all of our swimmers who turn out. Any swimmer who is willing to turn out for the club and try their best, no matter what place they achieve, is greatly appreciated!

05-11-2007Trophies need to be returned by 14th November. [Posted by: cjs30]
Can we remind swimmers that trophies won last year need to be returned to either Mark Nunn or Mark Lavers by the 14th November? Our first Club Championship gala is on the 1st December and we need time to check and organize the trophies for the presentations on each night.

20-10-2007Four more galas for 2008 - Anglian League [Posted by: cjs30]

We have just been told that next year we are in the Anglian League. The galas consist of 31 races in age categories 13/U, 15/U and Open. The 13/U and 15/U have 100m races in the four strokes, and a 200m IM. The Open age group have 50m races in the four strokes and a 100m IM. There is only one team relay. The galas are on: 9th Feb, 19th April, 28th June and 27th September.

The league should be a very good follow on from the Junior Fenland League, and considerably less demanding than the Speedo League.

17-10-2007Reduced fees for long-standing members who attend once per week. [Posted by: cjs30]

The club recognizes that as our swimmers progress into their final GCSE years and beyond swimming at the club two or three times a week becomes difficult as work and other sporting committments take up significant amounts of time. In the past this has been the point at which some of our swimmers have decided to leave the club. This has caused problems in finding older swimmers for various galas. Our older swimmers, many of whom have been with us for more than 4 years, are much valued as they set the standards that our younger swimmers can aspire to.

In an attempt to address these issues the club can now offer a reduced fee to those swimmers, if they meet the following criteria:

Any swimmer who has been with the club for at least 4 years, and is only able to attend ONE session per week can apply for a 50% reduction in fees. This offer is only available if the swimmer's nominated session has sufficient space and is under annual review.

We anticipate that this rule will only affect a few swimmers each year.
14-10-2007Results of the Sunday (14th Oct) third session T10 [Posted by: cjs30]

Brian organized a relaxing (!) T10 halfway through the last session. A T10 is a 10 minute timed-swim where the aim is complete the longest possible distance. The results below (in metres) are rather coarse since some rounding (to the nearest 50m) was involved. I have posted the results here so that swimmers can see how they improve when we next do it. These swims are a test of stamina and don't correspond tightly with 50m or 100m sprint times. Well done everyone - a great effort!

14-10-2007Swimming fees reminder [Posted by: cjs30]

Dear All,
Just a quick reminder to all of those who have not yet paid their Autumn Fees. The full amount now due is £70.50. Those of you who have joined the club after the start of this term have a reduced fee. If you haven't yet paid we would be really happy if you could do so soon (cheques payable to Bottisham Swimming Club - with the name of the swimmer on the reverse). Cheques can be given to any of the poolside helpers who will pass it on to Steve Johnson our treasurer. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me - Christof Schwiening (cjs30@cam.ac.uk).

18-09-2007Congratulations to the SFL swimmers on an excellent performance! [Posted by: cjs30]
It was an excellent competition with our swimmers putting in a great performance. We got 4 first places, 13 second places, 6 third places, 10 fourth places and 12 fifth places. The team got a very strong 4th place beating Downham by quite a margin and just 15 points behind the hosts Ely.

I was impressed by the effort put in by all the swimmers (there were 18 personal bests) and by how our younger swimmers tackled the longer swims. I was particularily pleased to see most of the squad 'swimming through the wall' at the end of each race.

There was, as always, a great team spirit. Many thanks to Jackie and Den for making sure the swimmers were all in the right place at the right time, Stephen Murphy and Ben Pulford for time keeping, and a very special thank you to Shirley Shipton for acting as our judge.

17-09-2007Autumn swimming fees now due! [Posted by: cjs30]
For all of those of you who want to take advantage of the £5 reduction in swimming fees, payment is due by the 3rd October. The reduced fee is £65.50 per swimmer, payable to the Bottisham Swimming Club. Click the link for more details. Early payment is much appreciated as it greatly reduces the workload associated with collecting the fees. As you are probably aware The Club is organized by volunteers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Team Organizers). The majority of your fee is used to pay for pool hire with the rest being used to pay for our Swimming Coaches.
